17 Sep Simple Steps to Fit a Door Finger Protector at Home or in the Classroom
Little hands and fingers are by far the most delicate, which makes our door finger protectors especially important. “Finger injuries were common (38%) in those under 5 years. Most of these occurred at home (59%), commonly (48%) because of jamming between two closeable opposing surfaces, and mostly (79%) in doors at home and school. The doors were commonly (85%) closed by someone and often (60%) by a child. Sixteen (6%) were treated for amputation.”

Step 1 – Get prepared
Start by gathering your tools and preparing your work area. You’ll need just a few tools to complete installation, including a measuring tape, pencil, powered or standard screwdriver, Stanley knife, 2.5mm drill bit (for metal framed doors and kickplates only) and a PZ1 Pozidrive bit (if your screwdriver is powered).
At this stage, you should also check the condition of the door, paying particular attention to its hinges. The door should be well maintained and its hinges in good condition.
Step 2 – Cut to size
Your door finger protector needs to be cut to size to ensure a secure and reliable fit. When cutting, make sure it is not less than 20mm short of the top and bottom for complete protection across the door length. If the door has foot or kick plates, try to fit the device over them. You may need to remove, cut and refit the kickplate if this is not possible.
Step 3 – Measure and mark
Next, use your tape measure and pencil to measure and mark a vertical line at a distance of 30mm from the corner of the door and frame on each side. This task should be completed when the door is in a closed position.
Step 4 – Fit the shield
Now open the door, using the line you just drew to fit the shield device in the correct position on the frame. You will need to remove the double sided tape cover from one side to secure the device. Press down firmly, checking the position before securing further by inserting the provided screws in the predrilled holes.
Step 5 – Repeat the process
You’ll need to do step 4 all over again, this time on the door. Once in place and affixed with the screws, the fitting of your Fingersafe device is complete.
