Make 2025 all about hand care

Here at Fingersafe, we’re all about keeping your hands – and more specifically, your fingers – safe from harm. Our finger protection products have been preventing door-related finger injuries for over 30 years, but those digits and delicate hands need more than just protection from dangerous hinges to stay healthy.

With hand washing now more frequent – you can thank the Covid-19 pandemic for that! – you’ll need to take extra care. Keep them super soft, clean and healthy with our expert hand care tips…

Refine your hand washing habits

Many people have made an extra effort to keep up with hand hygiene since the pandemic reared its ugly head. But, are you really washing your hands correctly? The duration of washing is pretty important for ridding your hands of troublesome germs. Here Women’s Health shares an easy hack that’ll help you get the length of handwashing just right:

“You may have heard this trick before, but singing “Happy Birthday” twice is a good way to ensure you’re washing for long enough, Dr. Adalja says. If you’re not a big “Happy Birthday” fan, the Los Angeles Times reported on a few other song verses (including Beyonce’s “Love on Top” chorus!) that will make your 20 seconds fly by. If you’re a few seconds short and wash your hands for, say, 15 seconds rather than 20, it’s not a huge deal.”

It’s not just the duration that matters. You’ll need a decent yet gentle hand wash to indulge in regular hand washing without causing damage to the skin’s carefully balanced microbiome. Sanitisers made with essential oils are great choices thanks to their skin friendliness and fantastic fragrance.

Avoid cleansing in hot water

Another factor that’s a vital consideration is how warm the water is when handwashing. Whether cleansing in warm or cold water, the same number of germs will be removed. It is after all the soap that cleanses, not the water.

Despite this you should opt for a comfortable, tepid temperature, instead of going scalding hot. Hot water will dry out your skin, stripping it of its natural moisture, leaving you in dire need of some hand cream.

Moisturise your mitts often

Keeping your hands thoroughly hydrated is the next piece of the puzzle. Soaps and sanitisers can have a drying effect, which leaves the skin on your hands particularly parched. Replenish lost moisture and preserve your skin’s barrier by applying hand cream after washing and whenever you need to.

If you suffer from eczema or psoriasis, teaming regular moisturisation with the occasional use of steroid creams and other topical prescription treatments can also get inflammation under control to enhance skin health further.

Don’t forget those nails

The health of your nails should also be a priority when making 2025 all about hand care. Like the skin, your nails and cuticles need a helping hand to counter the negative effects of over cleansing. Apply cuticle cream as part of your hand care routine to enhance the look and texture of your nails, and prevent chipping.

Know what to do should the worst happen

Hand and finger injuries happen, and they can occur anywhere, whether that’s at school or work, or within your very own home. Knowing what to do when door-related trapping takes place, and acting fast, is the key to making an even quicker recovery and preventing lifelong consequences.
